We love it when people talk good things about the 49ers, and it’s even better when the national media is dedicating a segment to free agency and who did it right. ESPN answered some questions about free agency and several of their analysts had good things to say about the 49ers. In fact, they were saying an awful lot of good things and nothing bad. For starters, Mike Clay called the Jason Verrett deal the best bargain deal: There’s of course dissenters, and Jason Reid, along with Kevin Seifert think the better bargain was a 49ers deal, but for Tevin Coleman. Seifert compares the Coleman deal to Jerick McKinnon: And Reid compared it more to helping Kyle Shanahan’s offense: It’s always good when people are saying nice things about the 49ers. I’ve been preaching that the 49ers have a good deal of salary cap space, but that could go to zero real quick if they aren’t careful. The moves they’ve made make sense, carry some risk, but also don’t weigh terribly on their cap figures for the future. Brandon Gowton, the smartest man on the internet and manager of Bleeding Green Nation, gives us his 3 reasons that the Eagles will lose to the Titans on Sunday.THREE REASONS WHY THE EAGLES WILL LOSE:1) Jim Schwartz’s defense struggles on the roadPhiladelphia’s defense plays very well at the home. Since the beginning of the 2016 season, the Eagles have allowed just 13.8 points per game when playing at Lincoln Financial Field. The Eagles are 17-3 in that stretch. Playing on the road has been a different story for Schwartz’s unit, however. In that same time frame, the Eagles are allowing 24.3 points per game in away matchups. They’re 7-10 in those contests. The Eagles obviously don’t have the same crowd noise advantage to help their pass rush in road games. That’s a bit of a concern going up a Titans offensive line that’s allowed the fewest quarterback hits through Week 3. Philly’s defense is very reliant on getting to the quarterback. It’s something they’re typically very good at doing considering they lead the NFL in pressures generated. But Marcus Mariota’s mobility presents the Eagles with a challenge they won’t face on most weeks. His ability to avoid pressure and take off running should be a concern for the Eagles. Since 2017, the Eagles have surrendered 282 rushing yards (6.6 yards per rush attempt) and one touchdown to mobile quarterbacks. 33 of those yards came on a run by Andrew Luck last weekend. 2) Carson Wentz might continue to be rustyWentz showed plenty of encouraging signs in his return to the field last week. But he also showed a lot of mental rust. Wentz threw an interception when he stared down Zach Ertz. He got the ball out late a little too often which caused some sacks and incompletions. I have complete confidence Wentz will improve over the course of this season. But it might take him more than just one game before he’s completely shaken the rust off. While I don’t think the Titans’ defense is a juggernaut just yet, the unit has performed well under new head coach Mike Vrabel and veteran defensive coordinator Dean Pees. Tennessee’s defensive line ranks 10th in pressures generated, per Pro Football Focus. The defense obviously did a great job of shutting down Blake Bortles, who had played well in Week 2, on the road last Sunday. The Titans might be able to stifle Wentz at times. It doesn’t help the Eagles that they’re still missing some skill players (Darren Sproles, Mike Wallace, and maybe more). 3) Special teams could be a factorThe Titans rank fourth overall in special teams DVOA while the Eagles check in at 29th. Tennessee is averaging 10.3 yards on punt returns and they’ve returned one kickoff for a touchdown. The Eagles, meanwhile, are averaging just 4.2 yards per punt return and 19 yards per kick return. Last week, the Eagles used Corey Clement at punt returner in place of Darren Sproles and he muffed multiple return attempts. Perhaps the wet and rainy conditions were to blame but it’s not like he has a ton of returner experience so that’s something to keep an eye on. If this turns out to be an ugly game, a special teams mistake could make all the difference. Founded by me in 2014, The Deep Ball Project—as its name suggests—takes a look at the stats from a quarterback throwing the ball down the field. In previous seasons, the minimum requirement was 16 air yards. For this season, it’s now 21.The main goal of this project is to look at how accurate quarterbacks are at throwing the ball down the field Luke Stocker Jersey , regardless of whether the pass is completed or not. To help explain this, I created “Accurate Incompletions”, which look at accurate passes that were dropped or couldn’t be hauled in, and “Inaccurate Completions”, which look at completed passes where the pass wasn’t exactly accurate but the receiver made an outstanding (yet unnecessary) adjustment. Therefore, completed passes are different from accurate passes.That brings us to today at Music City Miracles. Marcus Mariota’s availability in 2018 was all over the place due to numerous setbacks, but that’s not what we’re looking at this time. We’re looking at how he did throwing the ball down the field.Now, many Titans fans found Mariota’s deep ball in his first two seasons—particularly 2016—to be pretty good, but I personally thought it was average in both years. Mariota, to me, really felt at home in the short/intermediate passing games, similar to Tom Brady. In 2017, however, Mariota’s downfield accuracy took a gigantic step up. In spite of an offense with a limited scheme and an ineffective, inexperienced group of receivers, Mariota’s deep accuracy was outstanding, as his 62.4 accuracy percentage finished second among all quarterbacks on all throws of 16+ air yards.For more, let’s look at how Mariota’s accuracy percentages turned out in his first four years in the NFL, according to The Deep Ball Project.2015: 45.9%2016: 43.6%2017: 62.4%2018: 61.7%Mariota’s growth as a passer can be highlighted by his growth as a deep ball passer. The leap he took in 2017 in spite of his overall raw stats was incredible. And in 2018, even with the setbacks due to injury, his accuracy on throws of 16+ air yards was remarkable. So with this in mind, let’s take a look at Marcus Mariota’s chart for all throws of 21 air yards.BrickwallblitzNow, Mariota’s 50.0% accuracy on throws into Tight Windows (T. Windows) actually isn’t far off from his 50.7% accuracy in 2017, which ranked fifth among all quarterbacks. This is incredible considering last year’s ranking included throws of 16-20 air yards. His accuracy into Open Windows (O. Windows, 58.33%) is glaring, and is a giant step down from his 92.3% accuracy percentages in that area in 2017.
